I recently had the opportunity to take headshots for a former sorority sister and her sister.  I seem to luck out at having gorgeous models: just look at these two!

Such sweet young women, I look forward to seeing where their talent will take them!

We arrived in the early afternoon. A crisp, breezy, sort of autumn day, the sun sparkled on the ocean. Idyllic.  

A wedding, stripped to its basics, to the fundamental truths and feelings behind such a momentous occasion...

The rings.

A bride, beautiful with adornments.

Flowers.

 A ring for a father dearly missed on a day like this.

 A nervous groom singing a love song under his breath.

An excited bride who can hardly keep herself from running to him.

A chance meeting? "Funny seeing you here!"

"I've been waiting for you my whole life."

And nothing but love. Just love, stripped away to its purest form.

A ceremony.

A dance together towards forever.

A promise of a new life, lived together.

Family.

 A new family.

So what is a wedding really, then? The answer is simpler than rings, and flowers, dances, and kisses - it's a promise of forever, of two hearts... and one love.

While organizing my computer the other day, I came across these oldies but goodies. Taken in the summer of 2008 with my old camera (a panasonic DMC-FZ18), it just goes to show you how light can be the most important tool in your camera bag. Well, not technically IN your bag...

Happy Hallowe'en, everyone!

Just this weekend I shot my very first wedding. As a lifestyle photographer, my focus and forte is portraits -families, babies, children, the occasional puppy or chicken. You get the picture. I met Larna outside of work, and was stunned (and delighted) when she told me how much she loved my photography, because

a) how did she find my website?
b) really? she liked my work?

But then again, I suppose this site wasn't so very hard to locate on the big triple W (umm - hello, it contains my name). Reconciling myself to the fact that someone actually did like my work was a little bit harder. I am my own worst critic, and because I constantly see room for improvement, I often lose sight of the fact that I am improving. Go figure!

However, Larna, as I said, loved my photography and showed this site to her charming partner, Greg. And when they got engaged . . . wait for it . . .  they asked me to be their wedding photographer.

And as long as that took (not very long), I said yes, and we met, and I showed up, and I shot their wedding. It was a small, seemingly casual affair that was so intimate, and so bursting with love that not an eye was dry in the ceremony and every face was lit up with a grin.  

I promise I'll show more, and I'll tell you more (there's a lot to say), but let me quote the inimitable Tina Turner on this:

What's love got to do with it?

EVERYTHING.

 Sheye Rosemeyer is one of my favourite children's photographers, hands and high heels down. Soft, sweet, and heartbreakingly pretty, her photos are the visual equivalent of cotton candy melting in your mouth.

Yummy!

Sheye is also the mother of four wonderful children, three of whom are still with her today. Her youngest daughter, Ava, had her three years cut short when she got locked in the family vehicle, unbeknownst to her family, on a sweltering hot Australian day. She died as the result of complications from the heat, and from that moment on, everything has changed in the Rosemeyer home.

Grief grows and transforms, but even when it seems to recede, it's always there.  Sheye has documented her journey since that terrible February day, and it is truly an honor to read her posts.

This Saturday, August 22nd, Sheye will be holding the first of a new family tradition in her home - an annual tea-party in honour of her daughter Ava.

She's invited all of us to participate, and even if it's just a pink cupcake raised in tribute, I hope you'll join in. I'll be having a tea-party with my sisters out in the country, and you can bet we'll be raising our pinkies (and cameras!) in honour of one very, very, special, pink-loving, little girl who left much too soon.
